Shut up and let the music play

Fete promoters, there is nothing more annoying than hearing the loud shouting and carryings-on of these hype men at a fete. I can’t figure out their purpose. I’ve already bought a ticket with the sole purpose of enjoying myself.

I’m there to dance, wine, jam, go down low and get on bad. That’s what I and the vast majority of fete-goers set out to do.

Why do these people feel that they must urge, cajole and command people to enjoy themselves not once or twice but all night long, continuously, almost without break; sometimes stopping the music for minutes to tell you what to do, command you to answer stupid questions about where you come from and who you came with, etc.

You cannot properly enjoy the music because you’re not actually hearing any piece for any length of time before it is either cut, or someone starts shouting over it. This is an injustice to those who work hard to create and produce the soca.

Stop spoiling the music. I urge you hype men to shut up and let the music play. Our artistes deserve better.

And another thing, what’s this about not playing the music of 2016? Many excellent pieces were created this year, yet at fetes you are hardly hearing any of them.

And finally, please stop speeding up the beat of the songs creating a most disturbing uniformity in the music, coercing us into a constant almost frenetic pace. The pieces we have grown to over the season sound only vaguely familiar at a fete due to this unnecessary and unfortunate manipulation of the music.

Indeed, at fetes, the DJs have become more important than the music. Why did we the patrons allow this to happen?

What power DJs have! I urge them to use it better. Listen to what the artistes have created and let the music play!

Soca Lover.
