How can we rehabilitate students who have clearly demonstrated an opposition to the core subjects in the school curriculum? The curriculum has failed them. They have not become active participants in the learning process.
They behave violently because they are not equipped to take advantage of the various components of the curriculum. In fact, two secondary school students have turned like pit bulls on their principal. The Minister of Education cannot afford to run around like a headless chicken trying to micro manage every problem.
The Ministry of Education needs to take a radical approach to deal with out of control or delinquent students anywhere they exist. We need to reintroduce, in a robust manner, the apprenticeship programme as an alternative for students who are not academically inclined.
Programmes such as masonry, carpentry, small engine repairs, cosmetology, pedicure and manicure, geriatric care, master craftsman and beauty culture should be part of the traditional core subjects of any secondary school.
Other countries have done it. In Japan boys start to learn automobile technology from as early as 11. Why can’t we expose our students to various skills for the job market through the apprenticeship system once they make less than 30 per cent in the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA).
Deviant students mask their fears with anger, according to the Dr Phil show. These students need to use their hands more. It’s a no brainer.
