I read with amazement and concern, a recent news article headlined Maharaj blasts NGC over SIS, which spoke to Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj’s proposed action to show that NGC is using its power unethically.

This action appears to me to be an attempt to try and outdo the past regime in bringing the National Gas Company into disrepute.

As a senior citizen of T&T, who over the many years has seen and has knowledge of the important part NGC has played in the development of our country, I am terribly saddened by this latest outburst by a former attorney general.

In the past we have witnessed the once sterling reputation of the NGC tarnished by corruption and mismanagement of those placed in the offices of this state company.

The present powers, which have the misfortune of coming into office as the prices of oil and gas are plummeting, are being seen by many of my contemporaries as trying to restore the good name of this prestigious company, pursuing sound issues through legitimate channels.

Mr Maharaj is also questioning the practices of the banks and hinting at collusion between the State and financial institutions. As a former banker, I find this offensive and it saddens me that the public may not see banks as what they are: economic and social enablers.

Mr Maharaj, please. As one who spoke out against the corrupt practices of the last government, and as a distinguished lawyer and former attorney general, let the NGC, the courts and the banks do their work.
