Dear Mr President: I hope you get this letter of concern about the large number of homeless people (on the streets of PoS), also stray dogs and cats. I believe that humans have been put on the earth to take care of the animals; and that we should care for the less-fortunate people.
I am 14-years-old, live in Belmont and attend the Melville Memorial Girls’ Anglican School. I am in Standard Five and will be sitting the SEA exam this year. As a child growing up in my community, my parents taught me to be kind to people and animals. Whenever I am taken to Port-of-Spain by my parents I cannot help but see the many street people either begging or sleeping on the pavement. I see cats and dogs between people in the city as well.
I believe this is not healthy for both the people and the stray animals. I believe as human beings we must be kind to one another, care for each other and take care of the dumb animals.
Sir, I would like to meet with you to discuss an idea to take care of the street people and the stray animals. I have also written to His Worship the Mayor of Port-of-Spain, Mr Raymond Tim Kee on the subject and wish to meet with him.
Sir, I believe you may be able to guide me along, since I believe you can assist. Your concern for the youths of this nation is well known.
The idea is about getting a place, or going to an institution to motivate and assist those people who find themselves in this homeless state. Also, to find the stray animals and put them in shelters where they can be cared for.
Sir, I have heard many adults talking about these matters and what can be done, but the problem persists. As a child with a deep concern for poor people and a love for animals, I believe that we can do better.
I hope you will find the time to meet with me to discuss my idea, and how you can assist.
