Last week’s media reports of raw sewage making its way into the sea at Maracas Bay must have been so alarming to much of the national community.
So many of us have been swimming in this bay for “donkey years” that the possibility of E Coli and faecal coliform being present in dangerous quantities while our children and grandchildren frolicked there, spurred me in action.
Specifically, I journeyed to Maracas Bay very early on the Emancipation holiday and collected 10 oz samples of sea water from both ends of the bay and sent them for testing. The results, which are enclosed, show that while there is a presence of viable acrobes( present in most drinking water) at both ends of the bay and some coliforms at the northern or village end, there was no presence of ecoli and faecal at either end.
I must stress, however, that this sort of testing should be carried out by the relevant authorities on a regular basis.
