I am rapidly losing faith in our education system. Please, don’t get me wrong. I trust that there are still committed teachers who are trying, sometimes against all odds, to deliver the best possible education to our students.
However, I see that the isolated trickles of indiscipline and violence have swollen into a raging river that threatens to sweep away students, teachers and administrators who stand in its reckless path.
I am the mother of two precious, gifted children, who we are trying to raise with respect for themselves, their teachers and their peers. We are trying to ensure that they grow into successful young people with high self-esteem, love for their country, and compassion for their fellowman.
They are relatively safe for now in their little rural primary school, but what about when they must move on to the secondary level in a few short years? Do I dare entrust them to an education system that seems to be going mad? When students get physical with their principal, put out hits on their teachers and brutalise their schoolmates, how can I trust that my children will be safe?
Homeschooling is becoming an increasingly attractive option.
